Advanced Punch Card Generator: Complete User Guide - Professional Knitting Tool

Advanced Punch Card Generator — Complete User Guide

What This Tool Does: The Advanced Punch Card Generator is a professional tool for creating knitting punch card patterns for knitting machines. You can either draw patterns manually or upload an image to automatically convert it into a punch-card grid.

Step-by-Step Usage Guide

Step 1: Set Up Machine Settings

1) Select Your Machine Type

  • Go to the left panelMachine Settings
  • Select your machine from the dropdown:
    • Brother KH — 24×60 (default)
    • Silver Reed SK — 24×100
    • Toyota KS — 40×60
    • Pfaff — 32×80
    • Custom (for your own size)

2) Enter Custom Dimensions (If Needed)

If you choose Custom:

  • Width: 8 to 200
  • Height: 10 to 300

Enter your required values in the Width and Height input fields.

Step 2: Create a Pattern (Two Methods)

Method A: Convert an Image to a Pattern (Recommended)

Tip: For best results, first create a clean black-and-white design in Canva (or any editor), then upload it here.

Upload the Image

  • Go to Image to Pattern and upload using either:
    • Click to upload (click the upload area → select file)
    • Drag & drop (drop the image directly into the upload area)

Adjust Image Settings

Use sliders to improve the conversion:

  • Contrast (0–200%):
    • Left = lower contrast
    • Right = higher contrast
    • Default: 100%
  • Threshold (0–255):
    • Controls what becomes black vs white
    • Lower value = more black
    • Higher value = more white
    • Default: 128

Convert

Click Convert to Pattern and wait—the image will be converted automatically into the grid.

Method B: Manual Drawing

You can draw directly on the grid:

  • White cell = Empty (no hole)
  • Black cell = Filled (punch hole)

Drawing Controls

  • Click + drag to fill/clear multiple cells
  • Single click to toggle one cell

Keyboard Navigation

  • Arrow keys: move between cells
  • Space / Enter: toggle selected cell

Step 3: Edit with Pattern Tools

In the left panel → Pattern Tools:

  • Clear: removes the entire pattern
    • Shortcut: Delete
  • Fill All: turns all cells black
    • Shortcut: Ctrl + A
  • Invert: swaps black ↔ white
  • Mirror: flips the pattern horizontally (left ↔ right)

Step 4: Repeat & Tiling (Advanced)

To repeat your pattern:

  • Horizontal Repeat: 1 to 10 (repeat across)
  • Vertical Repeat: 1 to 10 (repeat down)
  • Offset (checkbox): shifts alternate rows (useful for a “brick” effect)

Click Apply Repeat to generate the repeated design.

Warning: Large repeats can make the pattern extremely big and may slow down the browser.

Step 5: View Controls

Grid Display

  • Grid Lines: show/hide grid lines
  • Numbers: show row/column numbering (useful for accurate placement)

Zoom

  • Zoom Out: down to 50%
  • Zoom In: up to 200%

Your current zoom level is shown on-screen.

Step 6: Export & Download

In Export & Download, you have 4 options:

Export PDF

  • Best for final printing
  • Prints at actual scale
  • Automatically includes title, date, and dimensions

Export PNG

  • High-resolution image
  • Best for digital sharing
  • Includes grid lines

Export Data (JSON)

  • Saves pattern in machine-readable format
  • Useful for saving and reloading later

Print Pattern

  • Directly print from the browser (quick copy)

Keyboard Shortcuts (Fast Workflow)

  • Ctrl + Z: Undo
  • Ctrl + Y: Redo
  • Ctrl + A: Fill all cells
  • Delete: Clear all
  • Space: Toggle selected cell
  • Arrow Keys: Navigate grid
  • Enter: Toggle selected cell

Pattern Design Tips

  • Use symmetry: Create clean designs using the Mirror tool for a professional look.
  • Start small: Test with smaller patterns first and refine using Undo/Redo.
  • Manage size: Very large patterns (e.g., over 100×200) may slow down performance and trigger warnings.

Export Tips

  • PDF: best for accurate physical printing
  • PNG: best for sharing online
  • JSON (Data): best for saving and reusing designs later

Common Issues & Fixes

  • Image conversion looks unclear
    → Adjust Contrast and Threshold
  • Pattern looks too big / too small
→ Change Width/Height or use Zoom
  • Browser becomes slow
→ Reduce pattern size (recommended limit: 100×200)
  • Print size is incorrect
→ Use Export PDF (prints in correct scale)

Advanced Features

  • Undo/Redo System: up to 50 steps
  • Live Preview: mini preview updates in real time
  • Statistics Panel: shows dimensions, fill %, and filled cell count
  • Accessibility: full keyboard support, visible focus indicators, screen-reader friendly

Typically shown at the top-right:

  • Dimensions (e.g., 24×60)
  • Fill Percentage (e.g., 45% filled)
